Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Ledger Live download, setup, security, and supported cryptocurrencies.

What is Ledger Live?

Ledger Live is the official companion application for Ledger hardware wallets. It provides a unified interface to manage your entire cryptocurrency portfolio, install wallet apps on your device, send and receive digital assets, stake tokens for rewards, and access decentralized finance (DeFi) services. All operations requiring private key access are confirmed directly on the Ledger hardware device, ensuring your keys never leave the secure chip.

How do I download Ledger Live?

Ledger Live is available as a free download for desktop platforms (Windows 10+, macOS 12+, Linux) and mobile devices (iOS 15+, Android 10+). Visit our home page and click the "Download Ledger Live" button to get the application. The desktop installer is approximately 150 MB, and the mobile app can be found through the respective app stores. Always verify you are downloading from a trusted source to avoid counterfeit software.

Which Ledger devices are supported?

Ledger Live fully supports the current lineup of Ledger hardware wallets: Ledger Stax (with its curved E Ink touchscreen), Ledger Flex (compact touchscreen model), Ledger Nano X (Bluetooth-enabled), and Ledger Nano S Plus (USB-C). The original Ledger Nano S retains limited compatibility for basic send/receive operations but does not support newer features like NFT management or the full range of DeFi integrations.

How do I set up my Ledger device?

Setting up a Ledger device involves three steps. First, download and install Ledger Live on your computer or mobile device. Second, connect your Ledger hardware wallet via USB or Bluetooth and follow the on-screen instructions to initialize it — this includes choosing a PIN code and writing down your 24-word recovery phrase. Third, add cryptocurrency accounts through the Ledger Live interface and install the corresponding apps on your device. The entire process typically takes under 10 minutes.

Is Ledger Live safe to use?

Yes. Ledger Live is designed with a security-first architecture. The application itself never has access to your private keys — all transaction signing occurs on the hardware device's certified Secure Element chip (CC EAL5+). Ledger Live communicates with blockchain networks to display balances and broadcast signed transactions, but sensitive cryptographic operations remain isolated on the hardware. This architecture makes Ledger significantly more secure than software-only wallets, which are vulnerable to malware and phishing attacks.

What cryptocurrencies does Ledger support?

Ledger hardware wallets support over 5,500 cryptocurrencies and tokens, including Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Solana (SOL), Cardano (ADA), Polkadot (DOT), Ripple (XRP), Avalanche (AVAX), Polygon (MATIC), and thousands of ERC-20 and SPL tokens. Ledger Live also supports NFT management on Ethereum and Polygon networks. The list of supported assets continues to grow with regular firmware and app updates.

How does Ledger compare to Trezor and SafePal?

Ledger, Trezor, and SafePal are all established hardware wallet brands with distinct approaches. Ledger uses a Secure Element chip for hardware-level key isolation and offers Bluetooth connectivity across multiple devices. Trezor emphasizes fully open-source firmware and provides a touchscreen on its Model T. SafePal offers an air-gapped signing model with QR code communication, removing USB and Bluetooth attack surfaces. KeepKey, another competitor, provides a large-screen device with ShapeShift integration. Each wallet has trade-offs — Ledger's Secure Element chip provides a stronger security certification, while Trezor's open-source approach offers greater code transparency.

What is a recovery phrase and how do I protect it?

A recovery phrase (seed phrase) is a sequence of 24 words generated during your Ledger device's initial setup. This phrase is a human-readable representation of your master private key and can be used to restore all your cryptocurrency accounts on a new device. To protect it: write it down on paper (never digitally), store it in a fireproof safe or safety deposit box, never share it with anyone, and never enter it on a computer or website. Ledger also offers the Ledger Recover service for users who want an encrypted backup option.

Can I use Ledger Live on my phone?

Yes. Ledger Live is available for both iOS and Android. The mobile app pairs with Ledger Nano X, Ledger Stax, and Ledger Flex via Bluetooth, allowing you to manage your crypto portfolio on the go. You can check balances, send and receive assets, stake tokens, and manage NFTs from your smartphone. The Ledger Nano S Plus requires a USB-C OTG adapter for mobile use, as it does not support Bluetooth.

Does Ledger Live charge fees?

Ledger Live itself is free to download and use. There are no subscription fees or account charges. When sending cryptocurrency, you pay standard network transaction fees (gas fees on Ethereum, miner fees on Bitcoin, etc.), which go to blockchain validators — not to Ledger. If you use built-in exchange or swap features within Ledger Live, third-party service providers may apply their own fees, which are disclosed before you confirm the transaction.
