A recovery phrase (seed phrase) is a sequence of 24 words generated during your Ledger device's initial setup. To protect it: write it down on paper (never digitally), store it in a fireproof safe or safety deposit box, never share it with anyone, and never enter it on a computer or website. When sending cryptocurrency, you pay standard network transaction fees (gas fees on Ethereum, miner fees on Bitcoin, etc.), which go to blockchain validators — not to Ledger.
